Text Book Project

To ensure that all students at the Old Kampala Senior Secondary School have access to textbooks

​Facts:
 Less than 10% of the 2000 students currently enrolled in classes Senior 1 to Senior 6 have access to standard textbooks.
 Most students rely on classroom notes prepared by their teachers using books that are outdated editions.
 Despite this severe limitation, many students continue to achieve stellar grades in both ‘O’ and ‘A’ level exams.

Phase I: A pilot project that will provide 100 copies of textbooks for 4 subjects that were voted by all the heads of departments at a meeting convened by OKAS Fund in July 2016.The books, which will remain the property of the school, will be used by all classes on a rotational basis. The class teacher and the head boys/girls will ensure that ALL the text books are securely locked up at the end of each day. We anticipate the text books to last for a minimum of 5 years.The headmistress and the head teachers have provided a list of essential textbooks for the following subjects
• Mathematics (4 books)
• Biology (4 books)
• Economics (1 books)
• Geography (3 books)

Phase II: Full implementation of the project will be undertaken following the successful completion of the pilot project. For this phase, textbooks in the additional following subjects will be provided: Agriculture, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Fine Arts, History, and Physics. 
Estimated Costs:
Every effort will be made to procure the text books locally. The estimated costs of the two phases are as follows:

  • Shipping and Handling: £3,000 ($3,900)
  • Total Cost: £60,000 ($78,000)


Phase II

  • £32,000 ($41,600)
  • £5,000 ($6,500)

Project Dates and Audits:
• Pilot Project Implementation Date: January 1, 2017
• Full Project Implementation Date: July 1, 2017
• Audits: Monthly audits will be carried out at the School by the coordinator appointed by OKAS Fund. Furthermore, an annual review will be undertaken by a UK /US trustees who will visit the School at their own expense.

About the Author Dinnesh Dattani

Our Editor - Dinesh D. Dattani studied at Old Kampala Senior Secondary School from 1966 to 1969. He has many fond memories of the School, and considers this period of his life as tranquil, carefree and cheerful. Some of the friendships he cultivated during these formative years still endure.
